TENS Machine Hire
Stay calm, confident, and in control through every stage of labour.
Find your calm in every contraction.
Our Maternity TENS Machines help you stay centred and in control through every contraction — supporting your natural rhythm and easing the intensity of labour.
How do TENS Machines work?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, a simple device to help manage pain during labour.
A TENS Machine is a small handheld machine connected to sticky pads you place on your back. It sends mild electrical pulses that help reduce pain naturally. Women often feel a steady, tingling buzz they can control, turning it up during contractions, and back down again in between them.
TENS works by the Pain Gate Theory: your brain can only handle so many sensations at once.
Adding the buzz from TENS helps block some pain signals, making you feel more comfortable. These machines help you stay calm and focused through contractions.
TENS Machines are a popular natural pain relief option during childbirth. Used by thousands of mums-to-be, our labour TENS machines help reduce pain, increase comfort, and give you more control.

Our machines are specially designed for childbirth, with simple controls and a Boost button to help you manage contractions naturally. Here’s how to get the most out of it.
1. Get Set Up Early
You can begin using your Elle TENS 2 as soon as you feel contractions (often at home before going to hospital).
Early use helps build up endorphins and keeps pain under control.
2. Apply the Pads
Wash and dry your lower back (avoid oils or creams).
Plug the leads into the unit before sticking pads on.
Place two pads on either side of your spine, just above the buttocks.
Place the second pair a few centimetres higher, around bra-strap level.
Refer to your pad placement diagram if unsure.
3. Switch On & Select Mode
Turn the dial to ON.
The Elle TENS 2 comes pre-set for labour — simply start in Mode 1 for early labour.
Increase intensity gradually until you feel a strong but comfortable tingling.
4. Use the Boost Button
When a contraction starts, press and hold the Boost button (big purple button on the side).
Release it when the contraction ends — the unit will return to the gentler background pulses.
The change in sensation helps your body manage each surge more effectively.
5. Move Through Labour Stages
Mode 1 – Early labour: steady pulses to encourage endorphins.
Mode 2 – Active labour: deeper, slower pulses for stronger pain relief.
Mode 3 – Can be used in transition or if you want a change in sensation to stay effective.
6. Keep It On
Keep the machine running between contractions to maintain pain relief.
Remove for showering or bathing (TENS is not waterproof).
7. Safety Reminders
Do not use before 37 weeks unless advised by your midwife or doctor.
Pads should only be on your back — never on your stomach or chest.
Avoid use if you have a pacemaker, epilepsy, or certain health conditions without medical advice.
💡 Pro Tip: Practice with your partner before labour so they can help place pads and adjust settings when things get busy.Description text goes here

What is a TENS Machine?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation — a safe way to relieve pain using gentle electrical pulses delivered through the skin. These pulses help to block pain signals from reaching the brain and encourage your body to release its natural painkillers: endorphins.
Is it safe to use in labour?
Yes. TENS has been used safely for decades in maternity wards and birth centres. It’s non-invasive, and has no side effects for you or your baby when used correctly.
When should I start using it?
We recommend starting in early labour, as soon as contractions become regular (don’t use a TENS prior to being in labour). Early use helps build up endorphins and keeps pain under control before it becomes intense.
Can I use a TENS machine in the water?
No. TENS machines are not waterproof and must be removed before showers, baths, or water births. You can put it back on afterwards.
Will the TENS interfere with other pain relief?
TENS can be used alongside gas & air, breathing techniques, movement, and massage. If you choose an epidural, the TENS will usually be removed but your medical professional can advise on this.
How does the “Boost” button work?
On labour TENS machines like the Elle TENS, the Boost button increases the pulse intensity during a contraction, giving extra relief. Release it once the contraction ends.
Is it easy to use?
Yes. Labour TENS machines are designed for childbirth. Most people find them simple to operate, even during contractions. You can ask your birthing partner to help too - if they need a job!
Do I need to practise before labour?
You can do. Some people like to be prepared, others find its something to focus on in the early stages of labour. You can always practise on your birthing partner so they can feel what you will feel - just start on a low setting!
Do I need to bring it to the hospital?
Yes. If you start labour at home, you can continue using your TENS at the hospital.
