When to Use a TENS in Labour

Understanding timing makes a huge difference.

  • Start Early

    Begin using your TENS at the very first signs of labour — when contractions are mild and irregular. This helps your body build endorphins early.

  • During Early Labour

    Use the boost button during contractions to help you stay grounded and focused.

  • During Active Labour

    Many mums continue using TENS right up until transition. It’s safe to use alongside:

    • Breathing techniques

    • Movement

    • Heat packs

    • Water (remove pads before getting in the shower or bath)

  • When NOT to Use a TENS

    • Before 37 weeks (unless advised)

    • In water

    • If you have a pacemaker

    • If your care provider has advised against it

  • Tips for Partners

    • Help place the pads

    • Press the boost button during contractions

    • Keep an eye on battery levels

  • Using the TENS

    Does it hurt? No — it feels like a buzzing or pulsing sensation.

    Can I use it with other pain relief? Yes, except water immersion.
