TENS MACHINE USE INSTRUCTIONS

Below is your full step‑by‑step guide to using your labour TENS safely and effectively.

What’s Inside Your Hire Kit

  • Labour‑specific TENS machine

  • Lead wires (leads) — these connect the pads to the machine

  • Electrode pads — these stick to your back

  • Birth comb & acupressure ball — squeeze during contractions for extra relief

  • Spare batteries

  • Carry case

Everything has been chosen to support you through early and active labour.

Before You Begin — Please Review the Product Manuals

For your safety and to meet insurance requirements, please review the official Elle TENS product manuals here:

These manuals include detailed diagrams, safety information, and model‑specific instructions.

How to Set Up Your TENS Machine

1. Connect the Leads

  • Plug the lead wires into the electrode pads

  • Plug the other end into the TENS machine

  • Make sure both ends “click” in securely

  • Keep the wires untangled so you can move freely

This step is quick — it should take less than a minute.

2. Place the Electrode Pads

  • Pad placement doesn’t need to be perfect. Start with this simple setup:

  • Two pads on your bra line (upper back)

  • Two pads on your knicker line (lower back)

  • You can adjust the pads anywhere on your back depending on where you feel contractions most strongly.

Important:

  • Never place pads on your tummy

  • Only apply pads to clean, dry skin

  • Avoid broken or irritated skin

3. Turn the Machine On

  • Start on the lowest setting

  • Slowly increase until you feel a comfortable buzzing or tingling

  • It should feel supportive, not painful or annoying

  • You should feel relief, not discomfort

  • If it feels too strong, simply turn it down.

Using BOOST During Contractions

Your TENS machine has a BOOST button designed specifically for labour. Here’s how to use it:

  • When a contraction begins → Press BOOST

  • When the contraction ends → Press BOOST again to return to the normal setting

  • BOOST gives you a stronger, deeper pulse during contractions, helping you stay focused and in control.

When to Start Using Your TENS

Start using your TENS in early labour, as soon as contractions become regular.

Using it early helps:

  • Build up natural endorphins

  • Keep pain manageable before it becomes intense

  • Give you a sense of control from the beginning

Do not use a TENS machine before labour begins.

Can I Move Around While Using It?

Absolutely. You can:

  • Walk

  • Sway

  • Sit

  • Stand

  • Lean over the bed

  • Use the birth ball

  • Just avoid water — remove the pads before showers, baths, or water birth. You can reapply them afterwards.

Can I Use TENS With Other Pain Relief?

Yes — TENS works beautifully alongside:

  • Breathing techniques

  • Movement

  • Massage

  • Gas & air

  • If you choose an epidural or have a caesarean, your care provider will advise when to remove the TENS.

That’s it — easy.
